New novel depicts magical orb that could determine earth's fate

The Hot Marble: A Soul's Warfare by Rosemary Barnes Bergman Althoff, shares the story of a mysterious sphere that connects earth to a new world and offers the key to a nefarious plot that endangers all of humanity.

When 10-year-old Gracie sees her older brother Patrick leaving the house one summer evening, she quickly catches up and announces she will be joining him. Aware that any attempt to dissuade her would be hopeless, Patrick confides that he has seen something strange flash through the sky and is on his way to check it out. Buzzing with excitement, the pair wonders if it might be a small meteorite. Instead, they are shocked when Gracie finds a white-hot marble--a small sphere projecting powerful energy that both sense immediately. Their older brother Lewis, a physicist, analyzes it with the help of his engineer friend Fred and soon all four have stumbled into the marble's connection to a magical new world called Lanthra. The group soon becomes embroiled in a plot to take over earth and Lanthra, and each must look inside to discover where their true allegiance lies.

"There is a battle at hand, whether you acknowledge it or deny it, and you are going to be a pawn and a player in the battle even if you think you've chosen to stay neutral," Althoff says. "A happy outcome has already been prepared for you (not "fixed" like fate), but it is not the rosy road you hoped for and you have the opportunity to join the enemy if you get discouraged."
