ALLEY-OOPS

I had moved into a new neighborhood and as I explored my new surroundings I saw a tavern called Eddies on the corner. The bar was very busy that night when I walked in. It was like a holiday celebration, but in any bar there is always a celebration going on. The bartender gave me my first beer free as a good will gesture to a new customer.

Prunella: Life On Woodybent Drive (Chapter 2)

In the last chapter, Brandt David, a rich and famous holo-movie director, strikes a deal with Rico Ricardo to make a holo-movie, entitled, Lovelace and Hard Drives. We meet Brandt's clone, Reginald Harley Davidson, serving him as his butler. They are invited to Maui, Hawaii for the annual CloneDroid Corporation convention. At the convention, Davidson, the wry, yet somewhat stuffy butler, can have upgrades that allow him to fall in love and have sexual relations with other androids.
Chapter 2 picks up back at Brandt David's large and exclusive Beverly Hills mansion, wherein Brandt and his butler discuss duplicated anatomies and the ethics of the android life in love and happiness...

Left Minding the Farm

Cal sat on the cracked concrete wall of the flood control channel holding a five foot stick with a heavy thread tied to the end. The thread had been cast out into the brown water, but since the water was almost still, the thread lacked any tension and fluttered in the hot breeze.

The Hamburger Flipper

His door sensor was about to light up when Wes Brown noticed Skittles Cortez coming briskly down the hallway of their historic 2020 apartment building with its updated lighting that allowed him to clearly see the happy smile on Skittle’s face. Wes assumed this was because Skittles Cortez had drawn a plum assignment and was now a Hamburger Flipper.

Prunella: The Invitations (Chapter 1)

She walks in beauty, like the night -

Of cloudless climes and starry skies …” - Lord Byron.

Fight the System for a Moulded Bell Pepper

Today, in the supermarket, my conscious was brutally raped.

I had intended to buy a trio of red-yellow-green bell peppers and had laid the colorful things, wrapped in crackling plastic, on the belt. The evil cashier glanced briefly at it as it was conveyed toward her, then resolutely grabbed it and tossed it in a little recycle bin at the corner of her cubicle.

So Now You Believe Me?! The Third and Final Part

The third and final part of Alan Zacher's tale of the urinating detective and the Vampire.

Because of Mom’s dislike of Paul, he chose to stay in the car while I dashed into the house and washed around my groin area and changed into a different pair of pants. Mom was upstairs when I came in, gathering-up any clothes that were white to do a load of washing because I was running out of underwear from peeing in so many of them, and when I told that I had had another “accident” and would she do another mini-clean to my suit pants, she said: “Again, Tom? You had another accident? I’m old, Tom, and I don’t have as many accidents as you do. You need to see a doctor.”

Imagine a Planet of the Apes

The premise is interesting and not so far-fetched as it was at the time of the original movie, given what our laboratories achieve. So I expected an engaging narrative around hyper-intelligent apes demonstrating how to outsmart the humans by being incredibly cooperative.

A call for papers: Exploring Future Business Visions Using Creative Fictional Prototypes

Although the guest editors share the premise of legendary Science Fiction (SF) writer Isaac Asimov (In Joy Still Felt, 1980, Doubleday) that predicting the future is a losing game, Brian David Johnson’s books (Science Fiction Prototyping: Designing the Future with Science Fiction1 (Morgan & Claypool, 2011)) & Screen Futures (Intel Press, 2010) offer a revised vision of the future of management theory/practice in which fictional creations shape tomorrow’s world of technological innovation.

Don’t Hide the China

Adults in our mid-western town lost a top secret panacea and left it up to us, the youth, to find it. Without it, they quickly succumbed to a deadly infestation and experienced impossible deaths. They died from a plague that ravished our city and left ghostly visages that existed as fiends of ghastly shadows and ominous portents that haunted dreams. As the plague spread, it spewed a deluge of corruption, greed and hatred.

Who Am I Now?

I am Lot’s wife, a deer lick in the desert, a pillar of salt, a vapor on the Plain, the buoyant sea.  You’ve heard my story. I have no name. His story, I call it–it’s cautionary. As everything was his, including me. Including our daughters, I surmise now, looking back.

Path Of Destruction

Eddie cowered in the corner of his living room. His head throbbed and his stomach grumbled, but he paid them no heed; his mind was preoccupied with other things. His refrigerator called out to him. It held food and drink, nourishment which promised to sustain his life and alleviate the discomfort he felt, but he ignored it. All he needed was his gun. The semi-automatic lay in Eddie’s sweaty hand, his finger resting gently on the trigger as the memories of the day’s past events played out in his weary and frightened mind.

The Darkness Among The Lights

'The Fhwi are  the light...' Frank was pondering while approaching the site of the Splendour Ceremony, which was going to be held inside the main theatre in town that night, '…and all this is really weird if you just think that their world is entirely immersed in an everlasting dusk in the shade of the Brown Dwarf that represents the sun positioned in the center of this small planetary system.'

Mosquito Killer

For some, the morning comes with joy and enthusiasm to live life. For some it comes and goes just like a regular phenomena, for some; it comes with grief and melancholia and for some it doesn’t come at all and their day starts with afternoon. But, it’s the point of view for humans and the scenario changes drastically for other human species. Human has become the greatest species on earth, though not because of its greatness, but because of its survival strategies and intelligence applied in making self-profit. There are other species who have survived just as long as humans, if not longer.

So Now You Believe Me?! Part 1

The Letter

The appearance of two black vans racing down the road of a middle-class suburb unsettles all sense of peace and quiet. The engines slow down just enough to heave the heavy metal vehicles onto a dusty residential pavement.   The engines are silenced and Captain Oliver Ribb takes his time to climb out the passenger side of the van. He owns the confidence of a lion, strolling across the Savannah, afraid of nothing, content with being the hunter.

Kite Fliers

"I'm about to lose reception, Carl."

"So where are you?"

"South of Vegas and west of Kingman, quite a bit west, just went through Amboy."

"Amboy?"

"It used to be a stop on old Route 66."

"Route 66?"

Roger sighed. "You're too young."

"Yeah, right. You really think he's out there?

"There's a chance. He bought a share in some played-out mine near here right before he left."

"Well, let me know if you find any trace of him."

"Will do."
