The UK release of British comedy film 'Hysteria' is finally here with cinemas showing the film across the UK from Friday 21st September 2012. Directed by Tanya Wexler and produced by Tracey Becker, Judy Cairo and Sarah Curtis in 2011 the film depicts the historical moment in which the very first motorised sex toys were accidentally discovered by the use of invented appliances by a Dr. Joseph Mortimer Granville in 1880's England. Although the film bases itself around the character of Dr.Granville, his colleagues, patients and family it also intertwines a love story which allows the film to appeal to a wider audience.
The film is sure to create ripples around the country, not least because of the delicate nature of its content! Maggie Gyllenhaal takes the lead role playing Dr. Granville's daughter, the Doctor himself is played by British Actor Hugh Dancy. Other cast members include Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett, Felicity Jones, Sheridan Smith, Ashley Jensen and Gemma Jones.
It's based on the true, historical story surrounding Dr. Granville, the first person to create an electromechanical vibrator. These early machines were designed to help doctors who felt unable to complete the 'pelvic massage' task used to treat the symptoms of 'hysteria' in women, manually. His invention was later followed in 1902 with a similar device patented by Hamilton Beach, an American company and portable vibrators were promoted as "delightful companions" in 1922.
Perfectly paced with that excellent sense of British humour, it really is a must-see, I know because I've seen it and it's bloody good fun that will have you tittering for days after.
